29.04.2019.

President of the Republic of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, opened the new passenger terminal at the New Port of Zadar in Gaženica on Tuesday, 24th April 2019, marking a new important step forward for Croatian tourism, which is significant not only for Zadar as a modern port city and an important junction, but also for the whole country. The President recalled that less than three years ago, at the same place, she laid the foundation stone for this building, "which is now in full glory infront of us". The ceremony was attended by a number of distinguished guests: special envoy of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, the Head of the Office of the Prime Minister Mr. Zvonimir Frka-Petešić, Assistant Minister of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Mr. Josip Bilaver, special envoy of the President of the Croatian Parliament Mrs. Marija Pletikosa, Zadar County Prefect and president of the Managing Council of the Zadar Port Authority Mr. Božidar Longin, and Chief Operating Officer of Global Ports Holding company Mr. Stephen Xuereb.

“Zadar today, unlike most of the Mediterranean cities, has a modern port outside of the city centre, 3.5 kilometers away, making the peninsula less polluted by traffic. By collaborating with the new concessionaire of international passenger traffic ZIPO, we gain access to knowledge and promotional channels that we have not had so far. We expect from the concessionaire everything that we signed in our contract, an increase in the number of passengers to 220,000, opening a home port within four years, and an increase in international traffic by 40%. As far as the terminal space itself is concerned, we have signed 13 commercial contracts, the Police, the Harbour Master’s Office and Customs are in the phase of resettlement and should complete the process by the end of this year, " said Director of Port Authority of Zadar Robert Škifić.

County Prefect Longin said that he is “pleased that the President, who laid the foundation stone, is here to see the fruit of our labour. With this building, along with tourism, numerous other branches of business will profit, which will be particularly noticeable when Zadar soon becomes the home port for cruisers. We have to prepare for this, raise the quality of hotel accommodation and expand the capacity of Zadar airport, which we are already seriously and thoroughly doing. Despite some obstructions we have experienced this year, we can proudly say today - Gaženica goes on. Thanks to all those who were part of this positive Zadar story”.

Chief Opearting Officer of GPH, the largest cruise port operator in the world, Stephen Xuereb, said Zadar was an important element in advancing their offer in the Mediterranean. "We continue to work hard and hope to help develop the Zadar port, but also to help developing the entire Croatian tourism. We are devoted to making excellence in this business. The new Zadar port is a magnificent project, has a good infrastructure and all the prerequisites for additional growth" Xuereb said.

Zadar, Croatia has been named one of the top cities in the world for travellers in 2019 by world-leading travel authority Lonely Planet.

The city receives the accolade in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2019, the highly anticipated annual collection of the best travel destinations, trends, journeys and experiences to have in the year ahead.

“Zadar has risen from the ashes of its war-ridden past and blossomed into a spirited cosmopolitan city,” where travellers can discover “cool bars and laidback cafes, ancient Roman ruins, innovative museums and rustic, trattoria-style restaurants,” explains Lonely Planet.

Unmissable experiences in the city recommended by Lonely Planet’s experts include: Spending a balmy afternoon on Zadar’s waterfront promenade soaking up the melodic tones of the Sea Organ, which uses ocean waves to create mellifluous tunes. Taking the world’s shortest ferry line across the 71 metres of Zadar’s harbour Tom Hall, Lonely Planet’s Editorial Director, said, “While many visitors to Croatia are drawn to Split or Dubrovnik, Zadar reaps the benefit of sitting just outside the limelight. Zadar’s small stature instantly allows travellers to connect to the local life and culture. The energy and bustle of the city are wonderfully juxtaposed with the ancient history hewn into the landscape. The city offers sweeping Adriatic vistas, sun-speckled forests and pockets of golden sand. This is a corner of paradise with attitude – and travellers are bound to fall in love with it.” Zadar features ninth on the list of top cities for 2019.

Each year, Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel lists start with nominations from Lonely Planet’s vast community of editors, researchers, locals and influencers, and are then decided upon and ranked by a panel of judges. The outcome is an eclectic list of destinations with unique, compelling and topical reasons to visit in the year ahead, as well as underlying travel trends to look for. Lonely Planet’s experts also select the best New Openings, Places to Stay, Food Experiences and Attractions for Kids.

Press Release

Press Release – New Passenger Port Gazenica, Zadar 15.02.2018.......(> more)
15.02.2018.

The tender for the granting the concession for the provision of services to passengers together with use and maintenance of port substructure and port superstructure in the port area open to public transport of a particular (international) economic interest to the Republic of Croatia - Gaženica port, Zadar, was closed today, 15.02.2018. at 12:00 o'clock, after two and half months after announcement.

The quality of the management of the public good, which is primarily achieved by high quality requirements in the tender documentation, which results in the selection of the best quality company for concessionaires, has the primary goal of raising the standards of the entire region with a special emphasis on improving the standards and quality of life of our fellow citizens.

In spite of more interested parties in the tender process, only one company submitted the offer: Zadar International Port Operations d.o.o., Ulica grada Vukovara 269d, 10000 Zagreb.

Within the period of next two months, the Port of Zadar Authority, ie the Governing Council, will issue a decision on granting a concession or refusing to accept an offer and canceling the procedure, all based on the proposal of a 7-member Governing Council giving a review and evaluation of the offer received.

One of the conditions of the competition is that the Passenger port Gaženica is also the home port for cruise ships. Home port means it is an embarkation port for passengers and cargo, not just a transit cruise port for cruises, which brings new value for the entire destination as well as many multiplier effects for the entire economy of the Republic of Croatia. So when we talk about home port, then the cruise guest is not just a cruise guest, he uses domestic traffic infrastructure and local accommodation because he usually comes a day or two earlier - so guests stay longer and spend more in comparison to destinations where they only tour. Add to that the fact that the average cruise tourist has above-average abilities, which is also immeasurable greater benefit for the local community. This is a project that directly and indirectly affects the guest's non-accommodation consumption, which is one of the strategic goals of tourism development in Croatia. This project enables Zadar, the County and Croatia to have for the first time one Croatian port which has all the necessary infrastructure and superstructure to become a home port for cruise ships.

Zadar's city walls inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

In January 2016, Croatia, Italy and Montenegro submitted to UNESCO a nomination for the inscription of the transnational serial cultural heritage “Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th centuries” to the World Heritage List.

After a long and demanding process of drafting the appropriate documents and evaluating the nomination, the World Heritage Committee, on its session held on July 9th of this year in Krakow, Poland, issued an opinion endorsing the decision to inscribe this complex heritage on the World Heritage List as the following components: the fortified city of Bergamo, the fortified city of Peschiera del Garda and the city-fortress Palmanova in Italy; the defensive system of the city of Zadar and the Fortress of St. Nicholas in Šibenik-Knin County in Croatia, and the city of Kotor in Montenegro.

The inscribed heritage “Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th centuries” represents the organization, formation, adaptation and implementation of the innovative “alla moderna” model of military architecture whose purpose was the defence of the trade routes and ports in the Adriatic and the east Mediterranean. After the changes conditioned by the introduction of the gunpowder, the elements of the “alla moderna” system showed its technical and logistical advantages, modern military strategies and new architectural demands in a remarkable manner.

The six mentioned components of the proposed transnational serial cultural heritage of the Venetian defence system contain attributes of remarkable universal value, including their typological diversity, visual integrity and preserved condition, thus fulfilling criteria III and IV required for the inscription on the World Heritage List. Zadar was the military and administrative centre of the Adriatic part of the Republic of Venice, and the centre of navigational routes between Venice and Corfu, Greece.

It is located on a peninsula fortified by the city walls with a series of bastions and curtain walls and an outer fortress overlooking the land. Neither the later changes have diminished the remarkable significance of its forts. The defence of the city on the peninsula still preserves an extraordinary accumulation of walls and structures upgraded over time: monumental Land Gate – a master piece of the high Renaissance, strong city walls and bastions which demonstrate the “alla moderna” military architecture. This are great news for Zadar but also for other Medcruise destinations in Adriatic Sea as Sibenik, Kotor, Trieste and Venice.

EVENTFUL START OF THE TOURIST SEASON IN THE PORT OF ZADAR

Apart from the earlier start of the cruiser season, there has been a number of events in Zadar during the pre-season that announced a successful tourist year for the city of Zadar and the Zadar County. ¨Wings for life¨ race, the 90-year anniversary of the first sea-plane flight from Zadar to Trieste, as well as filming of the “Grand Tour” television show on the “Sea Organs” and in the Zadar area all contributed to the eventful start of the tourist season and the successful promotion of the destination. Moreover, the excellent news about Zadar being inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List of the Venetian fortifications from the 15th to the 17th century in July this year should surely be an additional impulse to the overall tourist development of the destination as well as to the significant prolongation of the tourist season.

U novu trajektnu Luku Gaženicu država je uložila oko milijardu i 100 milijuna kuna financiranih kreditom Europske investicijske banke i Njemačke razvojne banke.
